Abstract

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of learning methods in improving the understanding of sixth grade elementary school students regarding integer arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division). Integers are a fundamental concept in mathematics that is the basis for subsequent materials, but are often a challenge for elementary school students. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection through observation, interviews, and analysis of student work results. The subjects of the study were sixth grade students at one of the SDN Prangi I, Padangan District, Bojonegoro Regency. The results of the study showed that the use of varied and concrete learning methods, such as the use of number lines, manipulative media, and educational games, significantly helped students understand the concept of integer arithmetic operations. Students showed an increase in their ability to solve problems involving addition and subtraction operations, and began to master the concept of multiplication and division of integers. The main challenge faced by students is understanding the concept of negative numbers in multiplication and division operations. The implications of this study are the importance of teachers to design interactive and student-centered learning, use relevant learning media, and provide intensive practice to strengthen understanding of integer concepts. It is hoped that this research can contribute to the development of more effective mathematics learning strategies at the elementary school level.
