Abstract

The rapid development of the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) sector in Madiun City has positioned it as a fundamental pillar of regional economic growth. Over the past five years following the pandemic, the MSME ecosystem in the city has expanded significantly. Ensuring sustainable MSME management is crucial to maintaining business continuity and fostering dynamic enterprise growth. Business sustainability serves as a key subdomain in addressing both social and environmental challenges. The alignment and balance of social, economic, and environmental practices in MSME management reflect the spiritual philosophy of Hamemayu Hayuning Bawana—a Javanese value emphasizing harmony and preservation of the universe’s well-being. This study aims to construct a conceptual framework for business sustainability grounded in the Hamemayu Hayuning Bawana philosophy. Field observations and in-depth interviews were conducted to explore the philosophical meaning of the concept. The informants comprised cultural and philosophical scholars, green economy and environmental experts, MSME practitioners, and eco-business influencers. The data were analyzed using Spradley’s ethnographic approach. The findings reveal that Hamemayu Hayuning Bawana embodies harmonization as a normative foundation for responsible management of economic, environmental, social, and spiritual resources. This harmonization is consistent with the Triple Bottom Line framework, which emphasizes the balance among economic viability, social equity, and environmental stewardship. The novelty of this study lies in integrating local wisdom—Hamemayu Hayuning Bawana—into the construction of a sustainability model for MSMEs, a perspective that has not been previously examined in existing literature.
